Habits That Keep Your AC Running Efficiently All Summer

Getting your AC ready for summer is a great start. Keeping it that way takes a little less effort than you might think.

Block heat during the day.
Keeping blinds and curtains closed on south- and west-facing windows during peak afternoon hours can make a meaningful difference in how hard your AC has to work. It sounds simple because it is.
Use your ceiling fans the right way.
Most people don't realize ceiling fans have a direction setting. In the summer, your fan should spin counterclockwise when you're looking up at it. That pushes air straight down and creates a wind chill effect that makes the room feel cooler. Running them correctly in rooms you're using lets you set the thermostat a few degrees higher without feeling it, and that adds up over a long summer. (In winter, flip the switch on the motor housing to reverse the direction and push warm air back down from the ceiling.)
Don't block your vents.
Furniture, rugs, and curtains placed over or in front of vents force your system to work harder and can create uneven temperatures throughout your home. Take a quick walk around and make sure airflow is clear.
Keep the thermostat reasonable.
Setting it to 68 when it's 95 outside doesn't cool your home faster. It just runs the system longer and wears it out more quickly. Around 78 degrees is a solid balance between comfort and efficiency when you're home.
Check your filter monthly.
A dirty filter is one of the most common reasons systems run inefficiently or break down. Takes two minutes and makes a real difference.
And finally, if something feels off, don't wait it out. Strange noises, higher-than-usual bills, warm spots, or water near the unit are all signs something needs attention. Catching it early almost always costs less than waiting.
