The DIY Summer AC Checklist

Before the real heat sets in, take 30 minutes and run through these checks. You don't need any special tools for most of them, just some attention and a willingness to get a little dirty.

Comparison of a dirty air filter and a clean one, highlighting the importance of regular maintenance for optimal air quality.

Change or clean the air filter.

This is the single easiest thing you can do. A clogged filter chokes your system's airflow and makes it work harder than it should. Swap it out every one to three months, and definitely before summer starts. If you have pets or allergies, check it monthly.

Clear around the outdoor unit.

Your outdoor compressor needs breathing room. Pull away any leaves, grass clippings, or debris that built up over the winter. Give it at least two feet of clearance on all sides. If the coils look dirty, a gentle rinse with a garden hose can help, but be careful not to bend the fins.

Smartphone adjusting a smart thermostat to 63°F. Screen shows "Main Floor," humidity at 39%, and outside temp 52°F. Clean, modern design.

Test the thermostat.

Switch it to cooling mode, drop the temperature setting a few degrees, and see if the system kicks on within a minute or two. If it doesn't respond, you may have a thermostat issue or something else worth investigating.

Listen when it runs.

A healthy AC runs with a consistent hum. Buzzing, rattling, grinding, or squealing sounds are your system trying to tell you something. Don't ignore them.

Check the drain line.

The condensate drain line removes moisture from the air as your AC runs. A clogged line can cause water to back up and lead to water damage or mold. Pour a quarter to one cup of plain white vinegar down the line and let it sit for a few minutes to break down mold and bacteria, then flush with water. Do this a couple times a year to keep it clear.

If everything checks out, great. If something seems off, that's your cue to call a pro before it becomes a bigger problem. HH Heating & Cooling serves the Tri-State area and can get you sorted out before the heat hits.
